I have given up on invading space for entertainment. I have a new human behaviour study. It involves talking to people when they don't expect it.
Yesterday evening I wandered into a chip shop and asked 'So, which end do I queue at?'. Silence. I was tempted to jump the queue forcibly to see if anyone would talk to me then. Or possibly even poke someone in the ribs until they said something, a la Fight Club, where they try to start fights with random members of the public.
If anyone has any suggestions for places where people don't talk to each other, I'd be glad to talk to people there and tell you my findings. I draw the line at between cubicles in public lavatories.

Bus stops. And anywhere there is a long line: Starbucks, grocery store, that sort of thing.
By the way, enjoying your blog way over here across the ocean....
Hooray, my first comment from a person-i-don't-know!
I have a tendency to avoid Starbucks - an anti-corporate attitude is pretty much a requirement for my employers. But I'll try out some places at the weekend and see what happens. I'm off to a country town on Saturday, so hopefully I'll be able to see what the difference is. Also, I look forward to going to New York in December, where I'll be able to see if Americans are any better.
Let me know what you think of us Americans! Although New Yorkers are a pretty seperate breed...grab some ethnic food if you have the chance at some little mom-and-pop place that looks like it's been there forever. Best thing about New York, in my mind....
